DAILY READING

John 12:1-8

When reading this passage, I kept being drawn to the very end of verse three, “and the house was filled with the fragrances of the perfume.” Now, I will admit that I am likely taking some liberty with the passage, but the more I read that the more it read to me “and the house was filled with the essence of the power of the resurrection.” The perfume intended for burial (that won’t be needed), fills the house with a spirit of a resurrection to come. I doubt that everyone in the house knew exactly the scent that they were smelling or the foreshadowing of resurrection it pointed toward. Maybe later it clicked for some of the dinner guests; maybe they had a moment down the line when they smelled a similar scent, and everything became clear.

I often wonder in what ways I live my life in which I am for others merely an aroma pointing toward the power of the resurrection. We, in our daily lives, are capable of being a reminder (or introduction) to others of the great love and grace God has for us. Just as a scent can remind us of a time or place, our actions and words can be a reminder of the power of love and grace for all.

ACTION FOR THE DAY

Today before you walk into a meeting, school, or any interaction, breathe in deep and remind yourself that you can be a light in darkness, a person pointing toward Jesus, and an active participant in the Kingdom of God.
