DAILY READING

Luke 19:28-40

You know those scenes in movies or TV shows where the hero commandeers a civilian’s vehicle in order to chase down the bad guy? It’s humorous to me to imagine the disciples commandeering a civilian’s donkey for Jesus. “Get out of the way, the Lord needs it!”

No doubt there were many who thought this triumphal entry into Jerusalem was an attempt at chasing down the bad guys. The hearts of the oppressed yearned for political and national freedom, and some thought Jesus might give it to them by marching on Jerusalem with an army. We know that’s not exactly how it went down. That idea of freedom was too narrow for what Jesus had in mind.

Instead, Jesus came with the message that to die to self was to find freedom. To be obedient to the will and law of God was to find freedom. Freedom can be found when we sacrifice our own abundance and generously pour out in service to the least of these.
