Luke 4:1-13

Why is it that temptation comes at the least opportune time for us? When we are finally starting to get back to a routine, the seasons change. When we are starting to get all the chores done and the house looking nice, the dryer breaks. It seems as if we are giving power over to these temptations when we react in ways that completely unsettle our normal routine. Instead of reacting with a sharp word or complaints, we look to Jesus to help us with giving our perceived power over to God. After 40 days of fasting and temptation, Jesus holds onto the foundation in God. Forty days of hunger and temptation. Truly, Jesus could have done all of these actions that were placed before him, but that would admit three things: God is not our provider, God is not the only one who should receive worship, and Jesus did not lead the way to triumph over temptation for his people. Jesus, in repeating scripture and holding fast to his Father’s will, completed the Shema, or Israel’s confession of faith – “Love God with all of your heart, your soul, and with all of your might.” Jesus died for our sins, but through his own life shows us how to live – giving all power, worship, and control over to God the Father. 

ACTION FOR THE DAY

Count out 40 days on your calendar from today. In your phone or planner, set an alert that reminds you of this scripture that calls us to give all of our power over to the God who provides, who we worship, and who leads us on the path of righteousness.  Maybe it is a weekly reminder, maybe a daily one – either way, seek out ways to give over everyday power to God.
