What a Witness

DAILY READING

Acts 6:8-15

FIELD NOTES

I think about a friend who passed away often.  She was one of my youth pastors growing up.  She was a third grade teacher.  She was famous among teachers in our state because she was listed as the lowest paid teacher in the state.  She had no health insurance.  She had to live with her parents.  She worked at one of the poorest schools in the state.

She had her master’s degree.  She was one of the best teachers in the state and could have worked in any school she chose.  She was approached by bigger and higher paying schools every year.

But she never left.  She chose to sacrifice her own comfort, her own life, for the kids of this poor, rural community.  She believed that was more important than more money, or even her own apartment.

And she was one of the most joy-filled people I have ever known.  Years after her death, I still find myself learning lessons from our time together.  Sacrifice brings joy and it also brings legacy.  What will your legacy be?

QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD

  • What are you willing to give up for God and the life he has called us to live?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • What do legacies mean, and why are they important?

PRAYER GUIDE

Lord, may our legacies reflect you and your love, grace, peace, and joy.  Amen.

FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT CHALLENGE

For the duration of our sermon series, we are offering daily prompts for applying the wisdom from the scriptures to our everyday lives. Each week focuses on how we can encourage those around us and bear fruit! This week we are focusing on the fruit of joy.

“I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.”
-Tagore

Think about the last time you served someone else or someone served you. Reflect on the joy experienced through that act of service. Thank someone today for the blessing of their act of service!
