Our Refuge

DAILY READING

Psalm 3
This weekend’s reading: Ephesians 1:11-23

FIELD NOTES

I remember once, back in the summer before my freshman year of college, my mother was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm.  It was the first major health scare for my parents that I had experienced.  Up until then, I was like most kids, looking at my parents as a constant, never changing force.  But now that image was shattered and I was forced to face their mortality, and it scared me.

Because I didn’t know how to talk them about it, and because I didn’t want them to know I was worried, I went to my secondary safe space—my youth pastor.  I remember I was telling him about everything and he stopped me mid-sentence and told me I was shaking.  I hadn’t even realized it.  I was just glad to have someone to talk to about it.

QUESTIONS FROM THE FIELD

  • Our Psalm talks about God being our refuge. Are you also a refuge, or safe space for anyone in your life?
  • How can you rely on God more to be your refuge?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • What do we mean when we say God will protect us?

PRAYER
Lord, be our shield. Help us to be shields for those around us. In your name, Jesus. Amen.
