Giving

DAILY READING

John 12:1-8

Upon first reading – and depending on your translation – this text can seem difficult to swallow. If you’re just reading Judas’ words, he makes a good point about giving the money from the expensive perfume to the poor. Once you know his intention, though, it provides a better foundation for Jesus’ rebuke. The NRSV translation includes a note that Judas “said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.” Knowing that, this story becomes less about giving financially and instead about giving glory. Mary is often described savoring her time in the presence of the Lord. She sat at Jesus’ feet while her sister Martha prepared the household. She anoints Jesus before his death. Mary is repeatedly shown giving glory to God and Jesus as her Lord and Savior. That, as Christians, is the foundation through which all our other actions flow. In everything we do, we should give glory to God. Whether it’s through worship and praise, giving to the poor, or how we treat others in our workplace, our actions should be to the glory of God. May it be so for you and for me.

ACTION FOR THE DAY

Be intentional to filter your actions through giving glory to God. This might mean having patience during rush hour, showing kindness to someone at the store, or giving thanks after every task. Look for how it shifts your perspective to see things as God does.
