Gratitude

February 8, 2019

DAILY READING

Psalm 138
This weekend’s reading: Revelation 3:1-6

FIELD NOTES
Someone once asked, “If you woke up tomorrow and only had that which you gave thanks for today, what would you have?”

I read a study a few years ago that demonstrated the changes gratitude produces in the human brain. When persons in the research trial began listing three things they were grateful for each day, their moods, relationships, sleep, physical and psychological health all improved. Since that time I’ve made it a habit to write down at least 3 things I’m thankful for each day. Some days are harder than others, but I’m so used to the practice now that my whole perspective has shifted. My blessings jump out at me now, and I don’t have to search for them quite so hard.

“I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart.”

QUESTIONS FROM THE FIELD

  • What are you grateful for today? Consider adopting the habit of asking yourself this question at the same time each day.

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • Tonight at dinner, discuss gratitude. Go around the table and give each family member a chance to consider their blessings.

PRAYER
God, you’ve created a world full of beauty and challenge. We are grateful for our chance to live in it, to share your promises with the world, and to share your love. Thank you for giving us this life. Amen.
