Overcoming the Flood

Psalm 93

FIELD NOTES

One of my favorite songs, Louisiana 1927, written by Randy Newman and later recorded by Aaron Neville, was about the historic flooding that devastated Louisiana and Mississippi. It describes the floods, but also the pain of feeling the flood waters rising – “Oh Louisiana, Louisiana/ They’re trying to wash us away.”  In Psalm 93, the psalmist writes a message of enduring faith, in spite of feeling like the flood waters are rising. The psalm begins an affirmation of God’s power on earth: 

1The Lord reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the Lord is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is established, that it cannot be moved.

2 Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting. 

However, immediately after, he begins to worry:  

3 The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves.

I don’t think that the psalmist lost faith. However, I think that he was struggling, like we all do, when we feel overwhelmed. But Psalm 93 concludes by reminding us of the solution: 

4 The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea. 

5 Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O Lord, for ever.

Never forget that God is more powerful than any storm we are facing. No matter how scared, overwhelmed, or lost we might feel in a particular moment, God is always with us and able conquer the rising waters.

  • What things in your life, or in our world, make you feel like flood waters are rising? 
  • When you feel overwhelmed, do you turn to God to ask for help?

  • The next time you feel overwhelmed, ask God for help! God is mightier than any storm or any problem we might encounter!

PRAYER GUIDE

God, help me. When the flood waters of life are rising, please help me remember that nothing is more powerful than you. Lord help me to endure in my faith and trust that you are never absent. Amen.
